Starting off, the U.S. got involved in the Vietnam War in 1950 and the main reason they got involved was because they wanted to take action against communism and communists. The U.S. started to begin air raids on North Vietnam and then they started to do other communist areas in the South. Their involvement was originally shaped by the Cold War. The United States felt that if communism was not controlled then it would spread from nation to nation. America witnessed how fast communism spread form China to Korea from their poorly controlled borders and did not want the same to happen to areas in South Vietnam such as Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Malaya, and Indonesia.
John F. Kennedy saw the danger that Ho Chi Minh, nationalist leader, was creating so he sent American military advisers to help the South Vietnamese army. Over time more and more American soldiers were sent against the Vietnamese army. They bombed almost everything, such as highways, bridges, railroads and cities. America thought they would win the war quickly because they had the most modern weapons. On the other hand Vietnam used the strategy of moving quicker and smarter than the United Stared to win. Overall, America got involved in the war because they thought it was their duty to stop communism from spreading around the world.
